The Church of God

North Carolina

2016 Youth Retreat

A note from our Victory Leaders Director

I am excited for this church year!!!

We have a wonderful group of VLB’s in NC and I’m privileged to be able to serve the young people in the best state ;)

I would like to thank each VLB Leader for all their hard work, dedication, time, planning of activities, study time, prayers, and fasting that you put forth for your local VLB’s.  As you know it is important to keep them involved whether you have 1 VLB or 20.

I would like to take this time to encourage our VLB’s to stay fit and healthy this year.  Although being fit and healthy is a great thing physically, I am referring to our spiritual bodies.

So many people will spend hours going to a gym, riding bikes, taking Zumba, Yoga, and other programs to help “trim down”.   They will invest money and time into these activities that can clearly be seen by others.  All the programs can aid in the assistance of weight loss but it is important for these activities to be coupled with good eating habits.  Spending hours at the gym and still eating un-healthy foods, snacks, and having soda during the day will hinder your weight loss.  Spending hours at the gym while eating healthy and taking in plenty of water will show results.  You won’t have to tell others that you are “getting in shape”, they will see it for themselves.   When weight starts to slim off and people are more energized, they are usually confronted by others.  They are often asked – “What are you doing?”, you look great.  People are usually willing to try your remedy of weight loss for themselves when they have seen proof of its effects.

This is the same way for us spiritually. When we spend money and time to “appear” that we are trying to lose spiritual weight, but we continue to take in “junk” of this world, the weight will stay the same.  If we can spend our money and time to ensure we are attending functions faithfully, taking in all the healthy scriptures, drinking plenty of the life giving water, and spending time in prayer, we will have results!  We will be confronted by others.  They will want what we have!  They will be willing to try “our method” of Joy, Peace, and Love.

How do we appear to those around us?  Are we in good spiritual shape?  Do we need lay off the junk/fast food (world)?  Do we need to make a trip to the gym (house of God)?

Hebrews 12:1

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Hebrews 10: 23-25

23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Praying for a healthy and spiritually fit year for our VLB’s

YOUTH RETREAT – Friday, October 14th – Sunday, October 16th

(You Must Be At Least 12 Years of Age To Attend)

Below is a letter from our General VLB Director…….

Our theme for this year is “Through the Gates” taken from Matthew 16:18, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Many have asked for my thoughts regarding this theme since the General Assembly. My mind and heart regarding this theme is that we need to rise up as the Army of God and destroy the devil’s kingdom. We need to bust through his defenses and take control. We are not going through his gates because we want to live there but because we must take it over and rescue what’s trapped there. It will be a harrowing battle, we do not know exactly what the darkness that is behind those gates holds but we know and trust in the promise of Christ that the gates cannot keep us out and, it follows that what is behind them cannot defeat us so long as we are faithful to Christ and the Church. Jesus gave to us “…power to tread… over all the power of the enemy…” (Luke 10:19). We need to take the battle to “the gates of hell”, the devil will pull out all of his defenses when we arrive but we cannot allow ourselves to be driven away by them, they cannot prevail against us!

We are planning two Mission Teams Trips this year. One will be a “Mission Exploration Team” to the country of Rwanda hosted by National Overseer, Bishop Makohá Francis Agati. Part of the goal of this team is to lay a good foundation for future visits by the National Overseer and General Headquarters to establish churches.

The other team will be a domestic/international trip to the cities of El Paso, TX and Juarez, Mexico hosted by Bishops Jonathan Smith, Regional Overseer CO/AZ/NM/TX(W), and Jose Bañuelos, National Overseer Mexico. Please be praying about and boosting these trips and be watching in the Evening Light and Greater Things for further information.

General Theme 2017-18

"Anointed To Serve"

Victory Leaders Band
The Victory Leaders' Band department oversees the needs of today's youth. Psalms 78:4-7 says, "...shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments."
 History of the VLB
It is essential that youth receive training which will enable them to be of service to God and His Church. God has provided the Victory Leaders Band to be that channel through which young people can become equipped for duty. Realizing this necessity, the Questions and Subjects Committee of 1928 made the following proposal:
"We believe our young people could be far happier in the service of the Lord, of far greater value to the work of the Church, and themselves rooted and grounded in the Church, if they were organized into band for prayer, for Bible study, for Christian service."
The Questions and Subjects Committee of the 47th Annual Assembly in 1952 made the following recommendation:
"We recommend that the membership of the Victory Leaders Band be confined to all people from twelve to thirty-five years of age."
Purpose of the VLB
For each auxiliary God has provided a specific ministry to help accomplish the work. For the Victory Leaders Band, the purpose is:
1.To evangelize the youth
2.To establish young people through Bible study and prayer
3.To inspire young people to raise funds for the printing of the gospel
4.To train young people to serve the Church and assist the program of God
5.To train young people for Christian service
6.To be a channel through which the local church is able to reach new people
Junior Victory Leaders
Beginning in 2007, the Victory Leaders Band is implementing a program known as "Junior VLBs". This program is a training program for children who are age eight to eleven years old. This is a preparatory program challenging this target age group of the Gleaner Band to advance and reach forward toward becoming a Victory Leader. The goal of this program is to educate this targeted age group in Bible study, scripture memorization, and guidance through the Word.
